Reckless Homicide Charge Resulting From Fatal Rogers Park Crash

There was a fatal car accident that happened during a police chase early Friday (April 13, 2018) morning in Rogers Park.   The driver that was attempting to elude police at the time of the crash faces numerous charges including reckless homicide.

The reasons for the police chase and subsequent fatal accident is discussed in various articles, including the April 15 Chicago Tribune article titled “Man charged with reckless homicide in West Rogers Park crash” as well as the April 16 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Drunken driver caused fatal Rogers Park crash during police chase:  prosecutors.”  Both articles discuss the reasons for the police chase, the extent of the chase, and the resulting fatal crash.

An excerpt from the Chicago Tribune article, regarding the driver (Jusef Wofford, 32) subsequently charged with reckless homicide:

Wofford drove through a red light at Devon Avenue and crashed into a vehicle that had the green light, police and prosecutors said.

The impact caused the victim, Tuong Lam, to spin out of control and hit two parked cars, according to court documents. He was trapped in his car and was extricated before dying. He was pronounced dead at 2:01 a.m. at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, dying from multiple blunt force injuries suffered in the crash, the Cook County medical examiner’s office determined following an autopsy Saturday.

During the crash the black van driven by Wofford rolled onto its side and slid into three parked cars.  Wofford was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of injuries that were considered to be minor injuries.  The Tribune article mentions that his blood alcohol content (BAC) tested at .139.

Wofford was subsequently charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI involving death, as well as additional charges.

Additional details and possible updates concerning this fatal accident can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
