Pedestrian accidents continue to be a significant traffic safety issue in the Chicago area. These accidents involve both people who are struck by vehicles both when they are walking in crosswalks as well as when people are not walking in crosswalks at the time of the crash.

According to Niles Police, the accident involved a SUV (an eastbound Kia Sorento) striking a pedestrian who was walking north across the street at 7:22 p.m. The accident scene was in the 8300 block of Golf Road. At the time of the crash the SUV was in the inner lane.
The pedestrian was identified as Svetlana Gerovaya, 68, of Buffalo Grove. She was pronounced dead at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

The driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and was not using an electronic device at the time of the crash, police said. No charges or citations have been issued as of Wednesday night.
