Recent Fatal Chicago Pedestrian Accidents

There have been a number of recent fatal pedestrian accidents in Chicago.  These have included accidents in which the driver did not stop following the accident, i.e. “hit & run” accidents.

Three of these accidents are summarized below.

There was a fatal pedestrian accident early Sunday morning (July 30, 2017) in Chicago’s University Village neighborhood.  According to Chicago Police, the accident happened at approximately 1:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of West Roosevelt.  At that time, a woman (identified as Beyanca Stephenson) was struck by a westbound car as she was standing near a vehicle in the bike lane.  She was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

An excerpt from the July 30, 2017 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Woman fatally struck by car in University Village“:

The 22-year-old man driving the Focus was cited for negligent driving and striking a pedestrian in the roadway, police said.

The accident remains under investigation by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit.

Another fatal pedestrian accident happened Saturday night (July 22, 2017) just before 11:30 p.m. in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood.  In this accident, a 45-year-old man (identified as Carlos Hernandez, of Cicero) was struck in the 3900 block of West 28th Street.  According to Chicago Police, as he attempted to cross the street between two vehicles, a cargo van struck him.  He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An excerpt regarding the crash, from the July 23 Chicago Tribune article titled “Pedestrian killed by van in Little Village“:

The driver of the van, Soriano Marco, 49, of the 2700 block of South Keeler Avenue, was cited for not having a valid driver’s license, negligent driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian, according to Chicago police.

The traffic accident investigation is being conducted by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit.

A “hit & run” accident happened on May 30, 2017 in the Gage Park neighborhood.  In this accident, which happened at approximately 3:00 a.m., a 28-year-old man (later identified as Lee Kline) was in a crosswalk crossing Garfield Boulevard when he was struck by a westbound vehicle.  Kline died after being taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.  The accident remains under investigation by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit, who are asking those with information concerning the crash to call (312) 745-4521.
