Bicycle accidents continue to happen in Chicago as well as the broader Chicago area. Such accidents – which can happen for many reasons – are notable as they often lead to serious and in many cases fatal accident injuries.
On this site, many bicycle accidents have been summarized. Two pages (“Chicago Bicycle Accidents” and “Chicago Bicycle Accident Injuries”) discuss various facets of bicycle accidents, including the medical and legal issues stemming from such accidents.
There was a fatal bicycle accident on Wednesday afternoon (July 26, 2017) in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. The accident appears to be a “right-hook” accident. As described on the “Chicago Bicycle Accidents” page mentioned above, here is a description of this type of accident:
“Right-hook accidents”: This type of accident happens as a vehicle makes a right-hand turn into the path of a bicyclist, thereby striking the bicyclist. This typically happens at intersections, after a vehicle passes a bicyclist, and then makes a right-hand turn, “cutting off” the cyclist. Often, this happens when the driver “forgets” that the bicyclist is near the vehicle, or the driver mistakenly believes that the bicyclist is further behind the vehicle than is actually the case.
According to Chicago Police, the accident happened on Laramie at 12:41 p.m., and involved a semi truck that was heading northbound. As it attempted to turn right onto Lexington, it struck a bicyclist who was also northbound.
The accident is summarized in the July 28, 2017 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Bicyclist fatally struck by semi in Austin.” An excerpt:
The bicyclist, 31-year-old Johnel Washington, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he died at 9:57 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the North Lawndale neighborhood.
The 44-year-old man driving the semi was issued a citation for failure to yield to a cyclist in the roadway, police said.
