Lawsuits Filed Regarding Chicago Area Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrian accidents continue to be a significant traffic safety concern in the Chicago area, as well as nationally.  Such pedestrian accidents are increasing, and there have been various stated reasons for this increase.  One reason cited is the increase in distracted driving, as well as “distracted” walkers.

As seen in the pedestrian accidents that have been discussed on this site (in posts found under the “pedestrian accidents” category, as well as further discussed on the “Chicago Pedestrian Accidents” page) such accidents in the Chicago area often involve serious accident injuries.  Many such accidents have been fatal.

Due to the harm caused by these accidents, which often includes permanent injuries and/or disabilities, lawsuits are often filed to collect accident injury compensation.  For fatal pedestrian accidents, wrongful death lawsuits are often filed if another party (not the pedestrian) is at fault for the fatal accident.  These other parties can be individual drivers, companies, or government entities.

An example of such a pedestrian accident lawsuit is seen in a lawsuit regarding a 2014 accident in which a CTA bus ran over the feet of a pedestrian.  The accident – and the $6 million lawsuit settlement – is discussed in the May 10, 2017 Chicago Tribune article titled “Woman whose feet were run over by CTA bus gets $6 million settlement” as well as the May 11 NBC Chicago article titled “$6M Settlement Reached with Chicago Bus Accident Victim.”

An excerpt from the NBC Chicago article:

The Chicago Transit Authority has reached a $6 million settlement with a woman whose feet were run over by one of its buses.

CTA general counsel Karen Seimetz on Wednesday told the transit agency’s board that Amy Koplin had the walk light and was crossing Michigan Avenue in January 2014 when she was struck by a bus making a right turn.

The then 25-year-old Koplin suffered multiple injuries to her feet and has a permanent disability. Her lawsuit against the CTA was scheduled for trial next month but went to mediation, which led to the settlement.
