“Drugged Driving” Involving Mixed-Drug Use

On this site “drugged driving” – also called drug-impaired driving – has been discussed in various posts, including highlighting a recent study regarding such impaired driving in the May 7 post titled “‘Drugged Driving’ Report.”

There are many reasons why driving while impaired because of drug use is notable.  As mentioned previously, there have been many recent Chicago-area accidents in which the driver has been under the influence of drugs.  As well, the frequency of such accidents is notably high and has been increasing.  As such, from a traffic safety perspective, such “drugged driving” has become a serious issue.

While common drugs involved in “drugged driving” include marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and meth, the range of such drugs used is very broad.  As well, prescription drugs – used in proper or improper dosages – are often involved in such impaired driving.

Often, if multiple drugs are used at the same time – or a drug such as marijuana is used with alcohol – the interaction can be particularly powerful.  Such mixed-drug use has been seen in many recent accidents.

A recent fatal motorcycle accident in Springfield, IL cited prescription drug use.  Two excerpts from the sj-r.com article of May 9, 2017, titled “Multiple DUIs for Springfield woman charged in fatal accident“:

Doris D. Fisher, 46, of the 400 block of West Cook Street was arrested on suspicion of DUI after the accident on North Dirksen Parkway about 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

also:

Fisher was under the influence of prescription medications at the time of the crash, the sheriff’s office said. She was also cited for driving without insurance and failing to yield at an intersection.

Additional details regarding “drugged driving” can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
