One of the most valuable benefits of wearing seat belts is that they greatly reduce the possibility of a vehicle occupant being ejected (i.e. when a person is partially or fully thrown) from the vehicle during an accident. Such vehicle occupant ejections often lead to serious injuries, and in some cases fatal injuries.
On Sunday afternoon (February 26, 2017) there was a fatal crash on the Edens Expressway near Tower Road in Glencoe.
According to the Illinois State Police and Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, the crash happened at approximately 2 p.m., and involved a car crashing into the concrete embankment at the ramp from eastbound I-94 to Tower Road.
The driver was identified as Miahailo Bjelopetrovich, 63, of Grayslake. He died at the accident scene.
An excerpt from the February 27, 2017 Northbrook Patch article titled “Fatal Crash On Edens At Tower,” referring to Bjelopetrovich:
He was reportedly not wearing a seat belt and was flung from his southbound Buick when he went off the road and hit a concrete beam, sending his car across all lanes of traffic into another concrete barrier.
This fatal accident is under investigation and the cause of the crash has yet to be determined.
