As discussed on this site’s “Chicago Pedestrian Accidents” page, there are a range of injuries that can occur during pedestrian accidents. Some of these injuries can be fatal in nature, either immediately (i.e. at the accident scene) or after a period of hospitalization.
Also discussed on that page is that many Chicago pedestrian accidents happen while people are walking in crosswalks. This is seen in individual posts seen listed in the “Pedestrian Accidents” category. Many of these accidents in crosswalks have led to fatalities.
Another Chicago pedestrian accident in which a man who was walking in a crosswalk was fatally struck by a car happened on Thursday night, January 26, 2017. This accident happened in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood, which is on the Northwest Side.
According to Chicago Police, the accident happened shortly before midnight, and involved a 64-year-old man who was walking across the street in a crosswalk.
The car that struck the man was driven by a 31-year-old man, who had been driving eastbound on Melrose Street. He hit the man while making a left-hand turn from a stop sign while attempting to go onto North Pulaski Road.
The pedestrian was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
An excerpt from the January 27, 2017 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Cops: Man, 64, fatally hit by car while crossing Avondale street“:
The driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian, police said. CPD’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is handling the case.
