Fatal Pedestrian Accident In The Jefferson Park Neighborhood

As previously discussed on this site – as well as seen in various posts regarding Chicago-area pedestrian accidents – many pedestrian accidents happen when pedestrians are crossing the street within a crosswalk.

Another fatal pedestrian accident happened Sunday afternoon (November 13, 2016) during which two people were crossing a street in Chicago within a crosswalk.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the accident happened in the Jefferson Park neighborhood (Northwest Side) at 4:11 p.m., as a 39-year-old woman and two-year-old boy were crossing the street on Central Avenue (in the 4700 block of North Central Avenue.)  The cargo van that struck them had been heading southbound on North Central Avenue after turning left from westbound Giddings Street.

The 2-year-old boy and woman were both taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for treatment of their accident injuries.  The boy was declared dead, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The woman’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening in nature.

An excerpt from the Chicago Sun-Times article of November 13, 2016, titled “Driver cited after fatally striking 2-year-old boy on NW Side“:

The driver, 48-year-old Alexander Vasquez Jr., was issued one citation for failure to stop at a stop sign, two citations for failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk, and two citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said. He is scheduled to appear in traffic court Dec. 16.

Additional details regarding this fatal Chicago pedestrian accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the Chicago Sun-Times article mentioned above, as well as the November 13 dnainfo.com article titled “Driver Ticketed After Boy, 2, Struck By Car In Jefferson Park, Police Say.”
