SUV Collides With Semi Truck At Randall Road Toll Plaza

There was a car-truck accident Friday (August 12, 2016) morning in Elgin at the Randall Road Toll Plaza.  The collision involved an SUV “rear-ending” a semi truck.

An excerpt from the August 12, 2016 The Courier-News article titled “3 injured in SUV-semi crash in Elgin

The driver of the SUV said its brakes gave out, so he tried to drive the car onto a median to slow and stop the vehicle, but was unable to do so, and wound up hitting the semi, said Elgin Fire Department Battalion Chief Terry Bruce. The truck was traveling at a low rate of speed as the driver had just paid his toll in a cash lane. Bruce said the estimated speed of the SUV at the time of the crash was 60 mph.

As a result of the collision, as seen in the accident scene photo, the front of the SUV got partially “wedged” under the semi’s trailer.  While a woman sitting in the rear seat of the SUV was able to get out of the SUV on her own, the driver and a male front-seat passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters.  The extrication process took at least 90 minutes.  The driver and front-seat passenger were then taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital for treatment of their accident injuries.  Both were reported to be in serious condition.

The female passenger was also treated for accident injuries.

The accident is being investigated by the Illinois State Police (ISP.)

Additional details and possible updates concerning this collision can be seen in a variety of media sources, including The Courier-News article mentioned above, as well as the August 12 Chicago Sun-Times article (with crash photo) titled “3 injured in I-90 crash near Elgin.”
