There was a fatal car accident sometime during early Monday morning (May 23) in Kankakee. Three men died in the crash and one man was injured.
According to authorities, the fatal rollover accident happened at U.S. Highway 45/52 and Interstate 57 (I-57) in Kankakee. The car, a 2007 Nissan Altima, was heading southbound on U.S. Route 45-52 near a ramp to southbound Interstate 57, when the driver lost control, and slammed into a large traffic signal pole.
According to the Kankakee County Coroner Robert Gessner, the driver of the car has been identified as Lukas Frye, 25, of Milford, Ill. An excerpt from the Daily Southtown article (with video) of May 23, 2016, titled “Identities of 3 Kankakee crash victims revealed by authorities“:
Gessner said Frye was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected about 30 feet from the car. Gates, a front-seat passenger, and Sarkozi, who was seated in the back, were wearing seat belts, Gessner said. A fourth person in the car was hospitalized and underwent surgery Monday.
Frye, Gates, and Sarkozi were declared dead at the accident scene at 5:27 a.m.
Due to the force of the collision, the engine was displaced from the car, and the car was otherwise heavily damaged in the crash.
The accident remains under investigation.
