There was a chain-reaction car crash early Saturday morning (April 9, 2016) on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290). The accident involved 13 vehicles and led to one fatality and four people getting hurt.
According to the Illinois State Police (ISP) the accident happened on the outbound I-290 at Central at approximately 12:40 a.m. At that time the accident occurred, and, according to at least one driver, the Expressway was blocked with cars and the slick roadway prevented stopping. It is unclear if road salt had been applied to the expressway previous to the accident.
Overnight snow and cold temperatures may have caused or contributed to the accident. Black ice has also been mentioned as a potential accident cause.
A 71-year-old man was killed in the accident; four people were injured, and they were taken to local hospitals for treatment of their accident injuries. Those injuries were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.
The accident remains under investigation.
