There was a fatal “wrong-way driver” accident early Sunday morning (September 13, 2015) on the Tri-State Tollway near Hillside.
According to the Illinois State Police (ISP) the accident happened at approximately 3:45 a.m. The accident occurred after a female driving a Toyota Camry southbound in the northbound lanes struck a Dodge Neon “head on.” After this initial “head on” collision, the Camry spun and hit a Chevy pickup truck.
A passenger in the Dodge Neon, identified as Steven Smith, 27, of Chicago Ridge, was declared dead at the accident scene. Smith was an off-duty Chicago Ridge police officer.
The driver of the Neon, said to be Smith’s cousin, suffered injuries that were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.
The driver of the Camry was taken to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment of accident injuries that were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured in the collision.
As of Sunday evening, no charges had yet been announced regarding this “wrong-way driver” collision.
