The Danger To Bicyclists Posed By Sinkholes

In posts on this site, including the March 18, 2015 post titled “Safety Issues Regarding The Beginning Of The Chicago Bicycling Season” as well as June 13, 2014 post titled “Hazards To Chicago Bicyclists And Motorcyclists From Potholes,” the hazard of potholes and the danger they pose to bicyclists are discussed.

A similar danger is posed by sinkholes.  Sinkholes, although less common than potholes, can pose the same – if not greater – danger to motorcyclists than do potholes.  Many sinkholes are large and can be very deep.

On May 7, 2015, CBS Chicago published an article (with video) titled “Sink Holes Sprouting On North Side.”  The article discusses sinkholes, particularly those in Chicago’s North Center and Roscoe Village neighborhoods, and a woman that was injured after she accidentally stepped into one.

An excerpt from the article:

Sink holes are not to be confused with potholes. Potholes are holes in an otherwise intact street. The sink holes occur with cave-ins, and the city’s Water Department is responsible for fixing the infrastructure.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in the CBS Chicago article mentioned above.
