Accidents On Chicago’s Lakefront Path

Chicago’s lakefront bike path is heavily traveled, especially during peak periods in good weather conditions.

As those familiar with the path know, the path has many users, including many runners, bicyclists, rollerbladers, and walkers.  As well, in addition to being a recreational path, it is also used by those using the beaches.

Given the path’s popularity – yet relatively narrow width in many sections – there exists the possibility of accidents, especially given the mix and relative speeds of the different users, as well as people turning around on the path as well as crossing it.

Given these dynamics, it is not uncommon for collisions and other accidents to happen among the various path users.

As well, there are a number of areas in which the path crosses busy streets, and hazards can also be present at these street crossings.

The December 10, 2014 DNAinfo article titled “Runner Injured on Lakefront Path Pushes To Separate Cyclists, Other Users” highlights a runner who was injured on the lakefront path near Diversey on September 23.  She was running along the path and a bicyclist collided with her.  During this accident, she is reported to have suffered extensive injuries and hospitalization.  (Her accident is also discussed in the October 12 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Jogger can’t recall being hit by bike, but bruises make it real.”)

An excerpt from the DNAinfo article above:

Megan Williams was training for her first Chicago Marathon this fall when she was knocked unconscious during the crash, suffering a fractured skull and bleeding in her brain.

One bike path safety proposal, espoused by Williams as seen in the article, is to separate cyclists and other path users.  This proposal is discussed both in the DNAinfo article as well as the Active Transportation Alliance post of November 18 titled “Crash victim calls for separating cyclists and pedestrians on Lakefront Trail.”
