The Active Transportation Alliance has released a list of the 10 most dangerous Chicago intersections for pedestrians, i.e. those walking across the street.
The list of the 10 intersections can be found at the Active Transportation Alliance’s “Safe Crossings Fact Sheet” (pdf) as well as at the dnainfo.com article of October 14, 2014 titled “Chicago’s Ten Most Dangerous Intersections for Pedestrians.”
The “Safe Crossings Fact Sheet” mentioned above contains a variety of statistics regarding pedestrian accidents and fatalities, as well as a list of “10 Dangerous Suburban Intersections.”
Two excerpts from the dnainfo.com article mentioned above:
The Active Transportation Alliance launched its Safe Crossings campaign Tuesday by pointing out that 78 percent of all crashes involving a pedestrian in Chicago take place within 125 feet of an intersection. Some 29 city pedestrians died in accidents last year, and 21 have already died thus far this year.
According to alliance figures, one-third of Chicago traffic fatalities involved pedestrians in 2012, compared with 14 percent statewide, and 40 percent of city pedestrian deaths involved hit-and-run drivers, compared with 20 percent nationwide.
The article also mentions that the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) estimates that about 3,000 pedestrians are hit by vehicles each year in the City of Chicago, and this results in 30 deaths a year.
Additional details and possible updates can be seen in the two sources listed above, as well as the October 15 Chicago Tribune article titled “Chicago’s most dangerous intersections for pedestrians.”
