$10.9 Million Settlement In Wrongful Death Lawsuit

There has been a $10.9 million settlement of a wrongful death lawsuit that was filed regarding the death of Illinois State Trooper James Sauter. The underlying accident that led to Trooper Sauter’s death was summarized in the March 29, 2013 post titled “Illinois State Trooper Involved In Fatal Accident On Tri-State Tollway.”

The wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Elizabeth Sauter, widow of Trooper James Sauter. The lawsuit was filed against the truck driver involved in the accident – Andrew Bokelman; United Van Lines LLC; Unigroup Inc.; and Suddath Relocation Systems of Minnesota and Milwaukee doing business as Barrett Moving & Storage in late 2013.

Bokelman allegedly fell asleep while driving before the accident.

Two excerpts from the May 14, 2014 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Widow gets $10.9 million settlement after state trooper’s death” :

Bokelman, 26, already has been criminally charged in Cook County for violating federal safety laws meant to keep tired truck drivers off the road. Prosecutors said he worked a 12-hour shift March 28 before he dozed off behind the wheel on the Tri-State Tollway near Glenview about 11 p.m., striking and killing the 28-year-old trooper from Vernon Hills.

also:

Cook County Circuit Judge Kathy M. Flanagan entered an order approving the settlement Wednesday after the parties reached their agreement several months ago in pre-suit mediation.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the Chicago Sun-Times article mentioned above, as well as the May 14 Chicago Tribune article titled “Family of trooper killed on job wins $10.9 million settlement” as well as the May 14 bnd.com article titled “Chicago: Widow of trooper killed in crash settles lawsuit.”
