Fatal Chicago Collision Involving Van And CTA Bus

There was a fatal accident early this morning (April 23, 2014) in Chicago’s Calumet Heights neighborhood. The accident involved a collision between a van and a CTA bus.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the fatal collision happened at approximately 12:45 a.m., as a CTA bus was traveling southbound in the 9300 block of South Commercial Avenue. A van traveling eastbound on East 93rd Street hit the bus near its passenger-side rear tire.

After the crash, the van erupted into flames. Two people from a nearby bar were able to pull two of the van’s passengers from the wreckage. However, the driver of the van remained pinned in the van. After Chicago Fire Department personnel were able to extricate the driver from the van, he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m.

The two passengers, whose genders and ages were not immediately known, were taken in serious-to-critical condition to Christ Medical Center and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.

The bus driver was taken in fair-to-serious condition to Advocate Trinity Hospital, Langford said.

No passengers were in the bus at the time of the collision.

This fatal Chicago crash remains under investigation.
