“Chain Reaction” Accidents On I-55

There were a series of “chain reaction” vehicle accidents on I-55 this morning (February 3, 2014) on northbound Interstate 55 (I-55.)

An excerpt from the February 3, 2014 Chicago Tribune article titled “Six hurt in chain-reaction crashes that shut I-55” :

A series of chain reaction accidents involving at least 10 vehicles and injuring six people snarled traffic for miles on northbound Interstate 55 in Will County earlier today, according to police.

Two fire departments and multiple ambulances responded to the crashes, which took place beginning about 8 a.m. on the interstate around Bluff Road and U.S. Hwy. 6, state police said. Those two exits are about 1.5 miles apart near southwest suburban Channahon.

Icy roadway conditions are being named as a factor in these various accidents.

As seen in the Morris Daily Herald article of February 3, titled “Five I-55 crashes Monday morning attributed to ice” :

Vehicles were sliding and spinning out, police said.

Additional details regarding these I-55 accidents can be seen in the Chicago Tribune and Morris Daily Herald articles mentioned above.

In general, “black ice” is being attributed to many recent vehicle accidents. This “black ice” hazard has been mentioned in various recent posts, and discussed in the January 7, 2014 post titled “IDOT Warning Concerning Black Ice On Illinois Roadways.”
