There was a fatal Chicago bicycling accident Friday night (December 6, 2013) in Chicago’s Douglas Park neighborhood.
The bicycling accident happened as a man was riding his bicycle home from work at approximately 11:50 p.m. when, along the 2500 block of West Ogden Avenue, a minivan struck the bicyclist.
The bicyclist, identified as Hector Avalos, 28, of Chicago, was declared dead after being taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Robert Vais, 54, of Riverside, was driving the minivan. An excerpt from the December 8, 2013 DNAInfo.com article titled “County Health Executive Charged with DUI in Cyclist’s Death” :
Vais was charged with one count of felony aggravated DUI causing accidental death, one count of misdemeanor DUI and one count of misdemeanor DUI with a blood alcohol content greater than 0.08.
He was also cited for failing to reduce his speed.
According to the December 8 Chicago Tribune article, titled “Charges filed in bicyclist’s death: ‘Tragedy of epic proportions’” Vais, according to court records, had a blood alcohol content of .118 when he was tested.
