Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing On Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive

A small plane made an emergency landing on Lake Shore Drive Sunday morning. While no one was injured, two cars hit the plane after it landed.

The pilot, John Pedersen, 51, of Lombard, had been flying his two-seat plane over the downtown Chicago area when the aircraft began to shake violently at approximately 6:00 a.m. As he thought he would be unable to get to an airport, he decided to land on Lake Shore Drive, planning the landing at a time when traffic would be stopped at a red light, so as to avoid an accident with traffic. When the light on East Balbo Drive turned red, he brought the plane down in the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive.

According to fire officials, the violent shaking of the airplane was due to tail-control issues.
