Reginald “Reggie” Destin, the skateboarder who was hit by an alleged drunk driver on October 19, died yesterday after being hospitalized following the accident.
Destin, 42, had been hospitalized at Stroger Hospital.
Destin had been at a bar on October 19, and had left around 2:00 a.m. He was riding his skateboard back to his car when he was struck by a car in a hit & run accident in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood.
Destin suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured skull.
A witness said that Destin was hit “dead on” by the car, which continued driving after striking Destin. Police pulled the car over shortly thereafter.
The alleged drunk driver has been identified by authorities as Luis P. Pena, 30. Pena didn’t have a driver’s license or insurance at the time of the accident. He was charged with aggravated DUI as well as leaving the scene of an accident with life threatening injuries.
According to prosecutors, Pena tested with a 0.188 blood-alcohol level, which is twice that of the .08 legal limit.
