On Friday morning, there was a bicycling “dooring” incident that resulted in the death of a bicyclist on Chicago’s Near North side.
Neill Townsend, 32, of Chicago, was riding his bicycle south on Wells Street, in front of Walter Payton High School, when the driver of a car opened the car door in his path, according to Chicago Police.
In order to avoid the opening car door, Townsend swerved and fell underneath the wheels of a passing semi truck. Townsend died at the accident scene.
The man who opened the car door was cited for opening a car door in traffic, according to the Chicago Police Department.
The accident remains under investigation.
