On August 28, Allstate released its Eighth Annual “Allstate’s America’s Best Drivers Report.”
As per the release, “The report, based on Allstate claims data, ranks America’s 200* largest cities in terms of car collision frequency to identify which cities have the safest drivers.”
The news release also states:
Car crash fatalities are at the lowest level they’ve been since 1949, but still average more than 32,000 every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
A weighted average of the two-year numbers determined the annual percentages. The report defines an auto crash as any collision resulting in a property damage claim. Allstate’s auto policies represent about 10 percent of all U.S. auto policies, making this report a realistic snapshot of what’s happening on America’s roadways.
Chicago ranks #152, which is ranked 4th in the cities with over 1 million residents. According to the report, the average driver in Chicago will experience an auto collision every 7.9 years, which is 25.9% more likely than the national average of 10 years.
In the release, Allstate also offers safe driving tips, specially tailored for both larger and smaller cities / suburban areas. These tips include the following items for the larger cities, which are further discussed in the release:
- Allow plenty of time to reach your destination.
- Know what’s happening in the city during the time you’re driving.
- Stay alert.
- Get directions to where you’re going.
These tips include the following items for the smaller cities / suburban areas, which are further discussed in the release:
- Watch the speed limit.
- Look out for pedestrians, especially children.
- Know the rules of the road.
- Keep a safe distance – especially around large vehicles.
