Fatal Car Collision In Chicago's Edgewater Beach Neighborhood

There was a fatal car accident Wednesday (July 30, 2014) in Chicago's Edgewater Beach neighborhood.

The accident happened at approximately 11:13 a.m., as a car, which allegedly was traveling at a high rate of speed, drove through a red light at Berwyn Avenue and Sheridan Road, and then swerved into a parking lane in order to pass a CTA bus that had stopped. The car then struck two people, as well as struck two parked cars, one of which then struck the CTA bus.

One of the two people struck died. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, a man identified as Frank Kiley, 71, of Chicago, died at the accident scene.

The driver of the car was identified as Vladimir Tsemakhman, 58, of Chicago. He was hospitalized with injuries. He has been charged with reckless homicide.

Chicago South Side Fatal Car Accident In Construction Zone

There was a fatal car accident early Saturday morning (June 21, 2014) in a construction zone on Chicago's South Side.

This fatal car accident happened at approximately 4:17 a.m. in the 4900 block of South Western Avenue, when a minivan driving north on Western Avenue disregarded a construction barrier and drove into a construction site. In doing so, the minivan hit a construction worker and then crashed into a piece of construction equipment.

Fatal Car Crash After Police Chase In Chicago

Both during and after police chases, accidents often happen. Many times, the car being pursued is traveling at unsafe speeds (and perhaps in other reckless manners) in order to elude pursuit.

There was another instance of such a crash happening in the Chicago area on Friday evening, April 11, 2014.

A police pursuit began after Chicago Police saw shots being fired from someone in a vehicle in the 2300 block of West Division, at approximately 9:45 p.m. After the car failed to stop for police, a pursuit ensued, with the pursued car crashing into a large pole near Ashland and Grand Avenues.

"Back-over accidents" are those that happen when a vehicle inadvertently hits, or runs over, an unseen person as the vehicle moves in reverse (i.e. "backs up".)

The potential for "back-over" accidents (also referred to as "backover" crashes) have been an ongoing concern, particularly for various vehicles in which rear "blind spots" and other limited visibility occurs.

Fatal Crash In Schaumburg

There was a fatal vehicle accident this morning (March 31, 2014) in Schaumburg, Illinois.

According to Schaumburg Police, the accident happened at approximately 10:40 a.m., and involved a SUV and a car at the intersection of Irving Park Road and Mitchell Road.

The fatal crash happened when a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV that was traveling westbound on Irving Park Road struck the passenger side of a Chevrolet Malibu. At the time of the accident, the Chevrolet Malibu was turning left onto northbound Mitchell Road.

Fatal Car Crash On The Edens Near Touhy

There was a fatal car crash on the Edens Expressway this morning, March 30, 2014.

Details concerning the accident and its causes are somewhat limited at this time.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP) the accident happened in the southbound lanes of the Edens near Touhy Avenue.

This crash involved two vehicles at approximately 1:45 a.m. According to the ISP, at least one of the two cars was traveling "at a high rate of speed."

Elman Law Group, LLC Wins Big With A Stunning $621,000 Jury Verdict In Cook County (Chicago, Illinois) "Wrist Fracture" Car Accident Case

Anthony R. Elman of Elman Law Group, LLC has successfully achieved a $621,000 jury verdict involving a wrist fracture stemming from a Chicago car accident. The case, John Calhoun vs. Peter Ochoa, was tried in Cook County Circuit Court, Chicago, Illinois.

Elman Law Group took the case to trial after there was a Last Offer to Settle by Defendant (American Family Insurance In House Counsel) of $45,000.

The case involved a 36-year-old plaintiff who was involved in a Chicago car accident, which happened when the defendant, insured by American Family Insurance Company, allegedly failed to yield the right-of-way when his car made a left-hand turn in front of the plaintiff's car. The plaintiff, who was the front-seat passenger in the car, suffered a wrist injury to his right arm when the deployed airbag hit his arm. The plaintiff had about 2-3 months of post-accident treatment for this wrist fracture. No invasive surgery was ever needed. The treatment consisted of pain medications, wearing a hand cast, physical therapy, and closed reduction non-invasive outpatient surgery. The defense was allowed to introduce into evidence that the plaintiff had a recent felony criminal conviction.

Plaintiff's medical bills were about $21,000. Anthony Elman's last settlement demand was $50,000.

Fatal I-57 Rollover Accident

There was a fatal vehicle accident early Saturday morning (March 8, 2014) on Interstate 57 (I-57) near 99th Street.

This fatal rollover accident involved a year 2000 Ford Explorer, which - according to police - was driving above the speed limit at approximately 1:25 a.m.

The driver lost control of the SUV, and it veered right, hit the right guard rail, and rolled over. The driver was ejected from the vehicle during the accident.

Lake Shore Drive Collision Between Ambulance And Pickup Truck

On Tuesday night (March 4, 2014) there was an accident involving a Chicago Fire Department ambulance and a pickup truck on Chicago's Lake Shore Drive.

This traffic accident happened at approximately 10:40 p.m., near Lake Shore Drive and Marquette, in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood.

Media accounts vary whether three people or five people were taken to hospitals. However, it appears as if all injuries were "non-life-threatening" in nature.

19-Vehicle Accident On I-57 Near Peotone

On Thursday afternoon (February 20, 2014) there was a large multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 57 (I-57) near Peotone that involved at least 19 vehicles, including seven semi trucks and 12 other vehicles.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), ten people suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospitals.

Proposed Plan To Widen Kennedy Expressway

There is a proposed plan to add an additional lane in each direction to the Kennedy Expressway between I-190 and Harlem Avenue. This proposed Kennedy Expressway widening would be done to reduce congestion and improve traffic safety. Additionally, other changes would be made, such as changes to the expressway's entrances and exits.

Two excerpts from the DNAInfo.com article of February 12, 2014 titled "Kennedy Expressway Should be Widened: State Officials" :

The plan, which is estimated to cost at least $43 million, could improve safety and benefit residents of the Far Northwest Side by making a "dangerous" stretch of roadway safer, Ald. Mary O'Connor (41st) said.

The plan would improve the flow of traffic by reducing the number of entrances to the Kennedy, which is typically jammed solid eastbound by cars leaving the airport traveling downtown and packed westbound by commuters heading to jobs in the suburbs.

Settlement Regarding Unintended Acceleration Disclosures

According to an article in today's (February 7, 2014) Wall Street Journal, titled "Toyota Nears Deal to Settle Probe of Recall Disclosures," Toyota is close to finalizing a deal to pay more than $1 billion to end a U.S. government criminal investigation of how it disclosed drivers' complaints of unintended acceleration.

Notable excerpts from the article include the following:

In 2012, Toyota reached a settlement in a class-action suit, agreeing to pay $1.1 billion to car owners who alleged they had suffered economic damage when their vehicles lost value after the claims came to light. Roughly 400 lawsuits alleging personal injury or wrongful death stemming from unwanted acceleration issues are still pending, according to attorneys involved in the litigation.

There were a series of "chain reaction" vehicle accidents on I-55 this morning (February 3, 2014) on northbound Interstate 55 (I-55.)

An excerpt from the February 3, 2014 Chicago Tribune article titled "Six hurt in chain-reaction crashes that shut I-55" :

A series of chain reaction accidents involving at least 10 vehicles and injuring six people snarled traffic for miles on northbound Interstate 55 in Will County earlier today, according to police.

Two fire departments and multiple ambulances responded to the crashes, which took place beginning about 8 a.m. on the interstate around Bluff Road and U.S. Hwy. 6, state police said. Those two exits are about 1.5 miles apart near southwest suburban Channahon.

Fatal Three-Car Collision In Aurora, Illinois

There was a fatal car crash today (January 25, 2014) in Aurora, Illinois.

This crash occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m., when an 81-year-old woman driving a 2006 Honda Civic north on Eola Road attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Bilter Road. As she attempted to do so, she collided with a 2014 Acura SUV that was heading in the opposite direction (south.)

The impact of this vehicle collision caused the SUV to hit a Honda Odyssey minivan that was stopped on Bilter.

Fatal "Chain Reaction" Crash In Plainfield, Illinois

Icy road conditions are being blamed for a fatal car crash this morning (January 25, 2014) in Plainfield, Illinois.

This multi-vehicle accident was a "chain reaction" crash that happened at approximately 10:30 a.m. along Interstate 55 West Frontage Road. According to the Illinois State Police (ISP) the accident happened between Oak Tree Lane and Benet Lane, near Joliet.

The "chain reaction" accident happened as a 29-year-old Plainfield man lost control of his car, as he was braking to avoid another car that had entered the roadway from the forest preserve. The 29-year-old's car slid on the road, which reportedly was icy, and went into oncoming traffic. It then collided "head on" with another car, said to be a Saturn.
