Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a Traffic Safety Facts report titled "Pedestrians." (pdf) The report is dated August 2012 and uses year 2010 and previous data.
Various aspects of the report are notable. Here are some of the key excerpts:
In 2010, 4,280 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 70,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States. On average, a pedestrian was killed every two hours and injured every eight minutes in traffic crashes.
The 4,280 pedestrian fatalities in 2010 were an increase of 4 percent from 2009, but a decrease of 13 percent from 2001. In 2010, pedestrian deaths accounted for 13 percent of all traffic fatalities, and made up 3 percent of all the people injured in traffic crashes.also:
Almost three-fourths (73%) of pedestrian fatalities occurred in an urban setting versus a rural setting. Nearly four-fifths (79%) of pedestrian fatalities occurred at non-intersections versus at intersections. Eighty-eight percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred during normal weather conditions (clear/cloudy), compared to rain, snow and foggy conditions. A majority of the pedestrian fatalities, 68 percent, occurred during the nighttime.
More than two-thirds (69%) of the pedestrians killed in 2010 were males.
Alcohol involvement -- either for the driver or for the pedestrian -- was reported in 47 percent of the traffic crashes that resulted in pedestrian fatalities.
The report has a variety of tables showing the trends of various aspects of pedestrian injuries and fatalities over the years.
As well, the report contains a variety of "Important Safety Reminders" with regard to pedestrian safety.
